Which route of the Camino should I walk?
First, you must know that the Camino de Santiago is not a single route as many people think. The most popular is the French Way, but remember, every route run different parts of the geography! Once you decide the route, we recommend you to adapt the stages of the Way to the time you have. For example, if you have 7 days, you can walk the French Way from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela.
How to train to walk the Camino
Being a pilgrim requires a physically and mentally preparation! If you do not usually do any physical activity it is advisable to walk a minimum of half an hour each day for approximately two months before starting the Jacobean route. It is also advisable to increase the training time.
Why mental training? The difficulty levels of the different routes of the Camino can vary. We could classify them in gentle, moderate or demanding. In this way, you have to take in account that you will walk an estimate of 25-30 km per day, it means an average 8-hour walk. So, keep in mind that you are not in a competition and walk around at your own pace.
Moreover, when you go for a walk you improve your mental wellbeing. Take advantage of it! If at any time you think “I can no more” or “I want to stop”, try to overcome the self-lock thinking clearly and positively.
Advices
Backpack
Your backpack should NOT weigh more than 10% of your weight. Bring only what is necessary: water, nuts… The ideal is to have a luggage transport service because, imagine taking everything you need for a minimum of 7 days! it would be impossible not to exceed the maximum recommended weight. In this way, at the end of each stage you will have all the luggage in your corresponding accommodation.
Footwear
Without your feet you will not be able to walk. It’s that simple, so DO NOT choose shoes for their price, choose for their comfort. Try to wear a waterproof shoe, especially if you are going to walk in rainy seasons, and use them before starting your Camino de Santiago. It is also recommended that the sole be made of carbon rubber and of higher density than normal trainers. It is also advisable to wear another footwear for foot rest.
Do not forget the importance of taking care of your feet…
