The Camino is a route of Jacobean tradition that exists since the discovery of the tomb of Apostle Santiago. According to tradition and historiographic sources the first pilgrim to the tomb of the Apostle has been King Alfonso II of Asturias, also known as Alfonso el Casto. Since then, the Way of St James receives pilgrims from all over the world to go to Santiago de Compostela. Thus, pilgrims has been traveled from the Middle Ages to our days, leaving us different official pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. The French Way, a World Heritage Site since 1993, has greater historical relevance and it joins most of the European medieval routes. The starting point of the French Camino is Saint Jean Pied de Port or Roncesvalles (located between St. Jean and Logroño). If you choose to start in Saint Jean Pied de Port, you will have the chance of walking the Pyrenees. Undoubtedly, it is a satisfactory stage, while it lasts, which always leaves a good memory. On the other hand, starting in Roncesvalles also offers a spectacular landscape of the Navarrese Pyrenees.
