Discover the Atlantic coast of Portugal on foot at Rota Vicentina

…walking from one hotel to the next along the trilho de pescadores and through the Natural Reserve of O Alentejo. We take your luggage so that you can enjoy every spot along the route. Walk along beaches, through natural beauty spots and small fishing villages and enjoy the gastronomy of O Alentejo.

You will also come across villages whose past has been dedicated to sea life. You will be able to enjoy the beaches at each and every stage along the way and have a dip in the sea and a packed lunch as the ocean spreads before your feet. Accommodation is mainly in small charming family hotels, several of which have swimming pools.

DAY BY DAY

  • Day 1: Arrival at Porto Covo. Arrival at Porto Covo, we recommend a walk around this small village to see the Rota Vicentina.

  • Day 2: Stage Porto Coco-Vila Nova de Milfontes 19 km. Today, you will enjoy long walks along beaches and dunes. On your right, you will see the island of Ilha do Pessegueiro. Your destination is Vila Nova de Milfontes, at the mouth of the River Mira.

  • Day 3: Stage Vila Nova de Milfontes-Almograve 15 km. Today begins with an interesting boat trip across the estuary (optional). The route then follows the coastline, occasionally passing through farmlands. Your final destination is Almograve, a small village where time stands still.

  • Day 4: Stage Almograve-Zambujeira do Mar 20 km. Today you will see the countryside of El Cabo Sardao with its lighthouse and one of the best beaches in Europe: the Beach of Zambujeira do Mar. This is the end of today’s stage, a magical place and meeting point for surfers.

  • Day 5: Stage Zambujeira do Mar-Odeceixe 19 km. You will continue through another beautiful area of the Natural Reserve of O Alentejo. On your way, you walk along small beaches set between cliffs that occasionally offer a bit of a climb. Odeceixe marks the end of today’s stage and has a pretty centre with cobbled streets.

  • Day 6: Stage Odeceixe-Aljezur 19 km. Today you see the Rota Histórica of the Vicentina Route. This stage is easy and all along flat ground at a short distance from the coastline. Aljezur is a historical town with an impressive castle. It is an ideal place to spend a few days relaxing on the local beaches.

  • Day 7: End of journey. We recommend you visit the city of Lisbon if you missed out at the beginning of this interesting route.
